Short Term Disability Integrating With IDI

Starting Sept. 7, 2022, The Standard will simplify individual disability insurance underwriting for some applicants with in-force short term disability insurance.

What You Need to Know

We won’t consider the following plans when we determine eligibility for IDI coverage, if the STD benefit period overlaps our IDI waiting period by 90 days or fewer.

  1. Traditional STD plans (e.g., 50%, 60%, etc.) with a 6-month or shorter benefit period
  2. Plans that provide 100% salary continuation for 6 months or less if a long-term disability plan is in place

We will count all other short term disability insurance when determining eligible IDI benefits. This change applies to new fully underwritten policies and increase options, such as Future Purchase Option and Benefit Increase Rider options.

See transition rules for this integration.
