Preparing for Employees With Long COVID

Millions of Americans have become sick with COVID-19. Many continue to suffer from health issues long after their initial diagnosis. Those who have ongoing or new symptoms that develop at least four weeks after infection are experiencing Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), or what is commonly called “Long COVID.”

Employees with Long COVID could become one of the largest groups of workers requiring accommodations. Employers should take employees’ complaints seriously and prepare to understand their condition. Managers should be trained to offer the right resources whenever an employee discloses a condition that may be impacting their work. This starts with encouraging them to talk with their existing provider(s) and to contact HR.
