Maryland General Assembly voted to enact Senate Bill 275, the Time to Care Act of 2022 (“Act”), creating a paid family and medical leave program for covered workers in the state of Maryland. Contributions would begin on October 1, 2023, and benefits would be effective January 1,2025, with employees eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid time off to care for their own medical need, care of family members, bonding or placement of a child along with addressing needs related to military deployment. New York has raised the maximum paid family leave from 10 weeks to 12 weeks per 52-week period.
Effective July 1, 2022, the benefit period will be 12 weeks for parental, 12 weeks for family, 12 weeks for own medical, and two weeks for pre-natal. The overall maximum will be 12 weeks per year. Employer payroll tax will decrease from 0.62% to 0.26%.
