Gain an Advantage With the Family Care Benefit. Only The Standard’s Platinum Advantage GSI includes the Family Care Benefit. This industry-leading benefit helps employees focus on family, health and healing when they need it most. Employers who offer this benefit provide income protection for those who need to take time off to care for a parent, spouse, domestic partner or child with a serious health condition due to injury or sickness.

Most disability insurance covers only the employee's illness or injury. The Family Care Benefit steps in when an employee needs to work at least 20 percent fewer hours and experiences at least a 20 percent loss in pay to help an ailing family member with a serious health condition. This benefit is a no-cost way for companies to provide progressive coverage and make a real difference in their employees' lives.

Protect Employees Who Lose Hours or Duties Because of Disability With the Enhanced Residual Disability Rider. Our richest residual option is available to occupation classes 3A/3P and higher. It provides no less than 50 percent of the basic monthly benefit for the first 12 months of residual disabilities.

Policyowners must show at least 20 percent loss of time or duties or income during the benefit waiting period. After the benefit waiting period, employees are considered disabled if they’re working in their regular occupation or any other occupation and they experience at least a 20 percent loss of income.

In addition, professionals in specialized work will appreciate the Recovery Benefit. It provides benefits if employees return to work in their own occupation or another occupation but continue to have at least a 20 percent loss of income due solely to the previous disability. The Recovery Benefit offers these clients the flexibility to return to work in their own or another occupation and still receive benefits.

Offer the Choice to Work, Even if Disabled, With the Own Occupation Rider. Available to occupation classes 3A/3P and higher, this rider allows a policyowner to work in another occupation if they can no longer perform the duties of their own occupation due to a disability. This rider offers employees a chance to pursue other endeavors, even if they’re disabled.

With the Own Occupation Rider, a policyowner could work in another job or specialty and still be considered totally disabled — and may qualify for full monthly benefits.
