Lines for Life

Lines for Life Building Hope Every Day
Preventing substance abuse and suicide and building hope every day.

Lines for Life is dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse and suicide and the promotion of mental wellness for all. Lines for Life crisis line call takers offer our life-changing, life-saving message of hope to those who need it most.

What We Do

Volunteering at Lines for Life is a life-changing experience. For over 30 years, volunteers have been the cornerstone of our crisis lines. In 2024, our compassionate staff and volunteers responded to over 174,616 calls, chats, and texts offering critical support when it was needed most.

As a Portland-based nonprofit, we are committed to preventing substance abuse and suicide while promoting mental wellness. Our core services include 24/7 crisis helplines, community prevention initiatives, and training programs. Through the national 988 lifeline, we provide free and confidential crisis intervention and referral services to a wide range of individuals, including youth, seniors, active military and veterans, those struggling with substance use, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and culturally diverse communities.

Calls to our crisis and referral hotlines are answered by dedicated volunteers who come from diverse experiential and educational backgrounds and serve as a vital safety net. They offer informed, compassionate responses and help de-escalate crisis situations with support from supervisors.

Each volunteer receives 100 hours of mental health first aid and crisis intervention training to prepare for the role. A non-judgmental attitude, emotional intelligence, and a 200-hour, 12-month commitment are essential qualities for success in this position.

Hear How Nate Volunteers to Help People in Crisis

I began volunteering at Lines for Life because my husband is a veteran, and I wanted to support an organization that brings hope and support to the veteran community. Over time, my 'why' has grown as I’ve seen the impact Lines for Life has across all communities. I believe deeply in their mission to prevent substance abuse and suicide and promote mental wellness. This work is essential to building stronger, more compassionate communities, and I remain committed because I believe in the power of showing up, caring, and offering hope – for everyone.
