What We Do
LEAP programs take place on the Lower Salmon River in Idaho and the Lower Deschutes River in Oregon. In partnership with nine Greater Portland nonprofits, LEAP extends the reach of each organization’s mission by offering transformative, multi-day river experiences — at no cost. Over four to six days, participants connect with others who’ve faced similar life challenges, easing isolation, and building a sense of belonging. Rooted in the “3-Day Effect,” LEAP harnesses the healing power of nature to reduce stress, improve focus, and strengthen resilience.

Come along for an unforgettable journey down the Lower Salmon River in Idaho with Friends of the Children and LEAP (Life Expanding Adventure Program). This multi-day trip brings together youth and their long-term mentors for a powerful experience in nature — far from the distractions of daily life and close to what matters most: connection, confidence, and community. Through whitewater rapids, riverside camps, and shared stories, participants strengthen their bonds, discover new strengths, and find healing in the wild. This is more than just a river program — it’s a life-expanding adventure.
There’s something about the river — about moving through wild places together — that helps people let go, open up, and begin to heal. We’ve seen it time and time again, whether it’s teens who’ve faced housing insecurity, young adults who have been through a serious medical condition, or survivors of trauma. Nature doesn’t ask questions or pass judgment — it simply offers space to breathe, connect, and remember you’re not alone.”
