Who's Covered

Covered Employees

The program covers state employees automatically through MetLife.

The program is voluntary for private employers and non-state public employers. Employees of employers who do not opt in also have the ability to enroll for individual coverage through MetLife.

Family Members

Covered employees will be able to take leave to care for a "family member" as defined by the Family and Medical Leave Act, as well as a:

  • Domestic partner
  • Parent-in-law
  • Grandparent

How it Works

Plan Administration

MetLife is the state’s insurance partner for administration of the Granite State PFML Plan. Although the state permits employers to use other approved carriers, there is a NH Business Enterprise Tax Credit that only applies to plans written by MetLife.

Funding

For state employees, coverage is employer paid.

Private and non-state public employers opting into the program have the option to pay for the cost of coverage or share the cost with employees. Individuals opting into the program cannot be charged more than $5.00 per week.

Private and non-state public employers opting into the program have the option to pay for the cost of coverage or share the cost with employees. Tax credits are available to participating private employers. Individuals opting into the program cannot be charged more than $5 per week.

Additional Information Employers Need to Know

Coverage is mandatory for state employees. Private employers and non-state public employers have the ability to opt in to the state plan through MetLife, self-insure, or use another approved private carrier. As an incentive, tax credits are provided to employers who opt in to the state program. Individuals whose employers do not participate also have an option to obtain comparable coverage.
