Optional Short Term Disability

Short Term Disability (STD) insurance is designed to pay a weekly benefit to you in the event you cannot work because of a covered illness or injury. This benefit replaces a portion of your weekly income, providing funds directly to you to help pay your bills and living expenses.

Eligible Employees can elect Optional Short Term Disability insurance. This plan is available for regular represented, non-exempt employees of Multnomah County, except Physicians Local 88-2, IUOE Local 701, Dentists Local 88-5 and Prosecuting Attorneys MCCPA, working at least 32 hours or three 10 hour shifts each week. You pay 100 percent of the premium through payroll deductions.

If you do not apply during the 31-day period beginning on the date you become eligible, then an Extended Benefit Waiting Period will apply.

The Extended Benefit Waiting Period provides that, for the 12-month period beginning on the date your insurance becomes effective, a 60 day Benefit Waiting Period will apply to disability caused by physical disease, pregnancy or mental disorder. The Benefit Waiting Period for disability caused by accidental injury would remain 30 days.

Members of Local 88, Painters or Corrections Officers (MCCDA), earning more than $60,667, have access to Optional Buy-up Short Term Disability insurance. This buy-up plan (including base) replaces income at 60% of predisability earnings up to $1,500 weekly.

These members can enroll for:

(a) the base plan (covers up to $700 weekly),
