Group Hospital Indemnity

Help Protect Employees from the Hospital Costs Medical Insurance Won't Cover

Rising deductibles and increased out-of-pocket costs are placing a larger financial burden on employees — a burden they may not have the resources to support. Group Hospital Indemnity insurance from The Standard can help employees prepare for the expenses associated with a hospital stay that medical insurance won't cover.

Here's How It Works

An employee or covered family member receives hospital services.

The policy pays a benefit because of hospitalization for injuries or illnesses, and includes hospitalization for pregnancy.

The Standard pays a benefit because of hospitalization.

The payment is not dependent on actual hospital charges and is in addition to medical insurance benefits.

Because employees are paid directly, there are no restrictions on how the payout can be spent.

It can help pay for whatever employees or their families need — copays, deductibles, childcare, utilities, groceries, etc.

Members hospitalized more than 30 days can waive premiums until after their confinement ends.

Identify the Plan Design Best-suited for Employees

Start by determining the plan that works best.

Hospital Indemnity: This plan can be customized to be compatible with an HSA. Employers are able to select the benefit amount and how many days of hospital and/or critical care unit (CCU) confinement are covered. Other optional benefits available are hospital admission or CCU admission.1

Select: This plan covers hospital admission, daily hospital confinement, daily CCU confinement, physician follow-up care, urgent care, major diagnostic exams and hearing devices. This option is not compatible with an HSA.

Enhanced: This plan covers all benefits within Select, plus CCU admission, emergency room visits, outpatient X-ray/laboratory services, ground ambulance transportation, inpatient surgery and anesthesia, and skilled nursing facility care. Benefit amounts and limits are higher than Select plan offerings. This option is not compatible with an HSA.

Premier: This plan covers all benefits within Select and Enhanced, plus air ambulance transportation and rehabilitation facility care. Benefit amounts and limits are higher than Select and Enhanced plan offerings. This option is not compatible with an HSA.

Opt for Added Features and Benefits

Other benefits available under the Select, Enhanced and Premier plans may include:

  • Substance Abuse/Mental Disorder Coverage: Provides benefits for daily inpatient care for substance abuse or mental health conditions.

  • Private Nurse coverage: Provides benefits for private nursing care if a patient is hospitalized.

  • Outpatient Surgery coverage: Provides benefits for outpatient surgery due to accidents or illnesses.

Promote Wellness

The Health Maintenance Screening benefit encourages employees and covered family members to maintain their health. It pays an annual benefit for covered wellness screenings, such as mammograms, lipid panels and colonoscopies, and can be included on any of the plans.
