As the foundation of your employee benefits program, Hennepin County's Life and AD&D insurance coverage from The Standard offers you the opportunity to help protect you and your family from financial hardship in the event of death.

The following is a brief description of features included in this plan.

Travel Assistance - Designed to respond to most medical care situations and many other emergencies that you and your family may experience when traveling 100 miles or more from your home (or in a foreign County), Travel Assistance provides a wide-ranging program of information, referral, coordination and assistance services. These services include pre-trip assistance, medical assistance, emergency transportation, travel and technical assistance, legal services and medical supplies. Assistance is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year whether you are 100 or 10,000 miles from home. Simply print out and carry the Travel Assistance Card found in the Travel Assistance brochure.

Life Services Toolkit - Group Life insurance from The Standard comes with a package of services to help you and your beneficiary make important decisions. We have partnered with Morneau Shepell to offer online tools and information that can help you with such tasks as creating a will, making advance funeral plans and managing debt. The Life Services Toolkit* also includes services exclusively for your beneficiary, such as grief support, funeral-planning help, and legal and financial assistance.

The Life Services Toolkit is automatically available to those enrolled in Life insurance policies from The Standard. Life insurance beneficiaries have access to services for 12 months following the date of death.

The Life Services Toolkit website features online resources to help you:

  • Prepare a will or other legal documents
  • Handle basic financial matters
  • Discover ways to lead a healthier life
  • Thwart identity theft
  • Make advance funeral arrangements

For 12 months after the date of death, your beneficiary can call a toll-free number for services such as grief support, funeral-planning services, and legal and financial assistance. Beneficiaries are eligible for up to six face-to-face grief sessions with a trained counselor, simple will preparation and phone consultation with a financial counselor, among other services. They may also consult helpful online resources about estate planning and other matters.

Repatriation Benefit - Provides an additional benefit (up to $5,000 or 10 percent of the life insurance benefit, which ever is less) to help pay for expenses associated with transportation of an eligible deceased member if the place of death is more than 200 miles away from the member's primary residence.

Seat Belt Benefit - This provision provides an additional benefit in the event of a covered automobile accident.

Air Bag Benefit - This provision provides an additional benefit in the event of a covered automobile acident.

Accelerated Benefit - Eligible members who are under age 60 and suffering from terminal illnesses may receive a one-time lump sum payment (up to 75 percent of their life insurance benefits).
