CSU-Paid LTD

Long Term Disability Insurance

The CSU provides Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance at no cost to you if you are an eligible employee. LTD insurance is designed to pay a monthly benefit to you in the event you cannot work for an extended period of time because of a covered illness or injury. This LTD benefit replaces a portion of your income, helping you to meet your financial commitments in a time of need.

If your LTD claim is approved by The Standard, LTD benefits become payable at the end of the 180-day benefit waiting period. No benefits are payable during the benefit waiting period. For answers to commonly asked questions, exclusions, limitations and reductions, please review the Long Term Disability Insurance Brochure and Certificate.

Some features of your LTD coverage include:

  • Return to Work Incentive/Child Care Expense Benefit
  • Reasonable Accommodation Expense Benefit
  • Survivors Benefit

See the brochure for details.

If you have additional questions about LTD coverage or to file a claim, please contact The Standard at 800.378.5745.

Employee-Paid Voluntary Coverages

Voluntary Coverages

The California State University recognizes that individuals have different needs and has provided eligible employees the opportunity to apply for the right amount of protection for you and your family at very competitive group rates. This is in addition to any employer-paid Basic Life, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) and Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance already provided.

The CSU offers eligible employees the opportunity to apply for Voluntary Life, Voluntary AD&D, Voluntary Long Term Disability, Accident and Critical Illness insurance.

*Please note the Voluntary Life, Voluntary AD&D and Voluntary LTD products are available to enroll year round, while the Accident and Critical Illness Insurances are only available to enroll for within the initial 60 days from your date of hire or during the designated Annual Open Enrollment period.

Please see more detailed information about these Voluntary insurance benefits:

Accident Insurance

Accident insurance helps protect your bank account from the out-of-pocket expenses that come with an injury — whether you're coping with a broken arm or recovering from a serious car accident.

In the event of a covered accident, your Accident insurance will pay a benefit directly to you or a covered family member that can be used toward a deductible, copay or daily expenses during recovery. Benefits are based on the injuries you sustain and the treatments you receive.

Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness insurance is an affordable way to make up the difference between what your medical insurance covers and what you'd owe out of pocket if you or a family member were to be diagnosed with a covered critical illness.

You may be eligible to purchase coverage between $5,000 and $50,000 in $5,000 increments for yourself and up to $30,000 for your spouse. Your kids are automatically covered at 50 percent of the amount elected for yourself. Kids are also covered for 21 additional childhood diseases, including cystic fibrosis, Down's syndrome, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Your rates will not increase as you grow older — meaning you'll have the same monthly payment for as long as you have your coverage.

Regular checkups are important for the things you depend on – especially your health. You and your covered dependents will receive a cash benefit of $100 when completing any one of 22 approved health screening tests, which may include a novel infectious disease test (including COVID-19) or a mammogram – that typically cost you nothing under your medical insurance. This benefit is available up to two times per calendar year when separate tests are completed on different dates.
