Who's Covered

Covered Employees

The program will cover state employees automatically.

There will be an option for private employers with 50 or more employees and non-state public employers to opt in. Employees of employers who do not opt in will also have the ability to opt in for coverage.

Family Members

Covered employees will be able to take leave to care for a "family member" as defined by the Family and Medical Leave Act, as well as a:

  • Domestic partner
  • Parent-in-law
  • Grandparent

How it Works

Plan Administration

The state will award Granite State PFL Plan administration to an insurer through a request for proposal process. The chosen carrier, or carriers, will also be able to provide administration to those employers and individuals who wish to opt in to the program.

Funding

For state employees, coverage will be employer paid.

Private and non-state public employers opting into the program have the option to pay for the cost of coverage or share the cost with employees. Tax credits are available to participating private employers. Individuals opting into the program cannot be charged more than $5 per week.

Additional Information Employers Need to Know

Coverage is mandatory for state employees. Private employers with more than 50 employees and non-state public employers have the ability to opt in to the state plan. Employees of employers who voluntarily participate can also take paid leave for their own serious health condition if their employer does not provide short term disability insurance. As an incentive, tax credits are provided to employers who opt in to the program. Individuals whose employers do not participate will also have an option to obtain comparable coverage.
