The Growing Importance of Disability Insurance

Illnesses that used to result in death are increasingly resulting in disability. The chart below shows that the rate of death among patients diagnosed with four major chronic illnesses dropped significantly from 1980 to 2000. At the same time, the rate of disability due to those diseases rose dramatically.

What does this mean to your business? By showing your customers how many more people are living with disabling illnesses, you can demonstrate that disability insurance is more than a "nice to have" benefit — it’s a necessity for protecting a portion of their employees’ incomes. Just as employees need medical coverage to offset the cost of treating illness, they need disability insurance to offset the impact that a covered illness or injury may have on their ability to earn an income.
