The Standard Turns 100—Company Celebrates by Building on Tradition of Giving

On February 24, 2006, Standard Insurance Company celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. Leo Samuel, founder and first general manager of Oregon Life Insurance Company, which would become The Standard, had no way of knowing that his company would still be doing business in 2006. But his legacy of sound business fundamentals still serves us today: financial discipline, quality products and a strong customer focus.

"Our company isn't an overnight sensation," said Eric Parsons, chairman, president and CEO. "We've had 100 years to cultivate relationships with our customers and distinguish ourselves as a unique organization."

Over the decades we've built trust with our policyholders, producers and the communities where we live and work. Although we've adapted our products and services to their ever-changing needs and expectations, everything we do is still centered on the basic promise that we'll be there for our customers in their time of need. We've kept that promise for 100 years, and we'll continue to keep it in the future.

We started out selling individual insurance, but today employee benefits have grown to become our core business. We wrote our first group life policy in 1951 and our first group disability policy in 1954. Both of those policies are still in force, standing as proof of our commitment to building long-term working relationships with our customers.

100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The Standard has a long tradition of community service. The company's employees regularly participate in charity events in their communities, and the company makes regular donations to worthy causes. To celebrate 100 years in business, the company decided to organize a Day of Caring each month throughout the year. In January, employees in 15 cities collected school supplies that were donated to local schools. In February, 300 employees of The Standard volunteered to work at 23 food banks across the country. And in March, employees and their families helped clean up around waterways across the country. So far in 2006, 55 nonprofits across the country have received donations or volunteer hours from The Standard and its employees.

From February through June, employees are helping Habitat for Humanity build affordable housing in their local areas. Some of our sales and service offices have teamed up with their producers to form Habitat for Humanity teams to help out at a Habitat building site in their local area.

Other events throughout the year include participating in youth reading programs, helping perform repairs and maintenance at youth summer camps and holiday-season gift drives.
