Group Long Term Disability and Short Term Disability Programs

In conjunction with SMA Services, Inc., Standard Insurance Company is pleased to provide eligible physician members and associate members of the SMA the opportunity to apply for Long Term Disability (LTD) and Short Term Disability (STD) insurance coverage.

Long Term Disability Insurance

Savings, sick leave, worker's compensation, Social Security, friends and family are some of the options for replacing income. However, the financial impact of long term disability often exceeds these limited resources. Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance from The Standard helps in two ways by supplementing other sources of income and providing incentives and assistance for disabled members to return to work whenever possible.

Key features of this offering include:

Own Occupation to Age 65 - The definition of disability only requires members be disabled from their own occupation.

24-month Own Specialty Protection - For physicians, there is a 24-month own specialty protection during the own occupation period. See the 24-Month Own Specialty Protection for Physicians flyer for more detailed information.

Reasonable Accommodation Expense Benefit - Subject to The Standard's approval, this benefit pays for up to $25,000 of an employer's expenses toward worksite modifications that result in a disabled member's return to work.

Assisted Living Benefit - Provides added income to members with severe disabilities when they need it most. The benefit is paid in addition to the LTD Benefit amount to a maximum of $5,000 if the member is unable to safely and completely perform two or more Activities of Daily Living without assistance or requires supervision due to severe cognitive impairment. Benefits are not reduced by deductible income. See the Assisted Living Benefit flyer for more information.

Lifetime Security Benefit - Provides lifetime income to severely disabled members, extending LTD benefits beyond the regular Maximum Benefit Period. See the Lifetime Security Benefit flyer for more information.

See the Long Term Disability Insurance booklet for more detailed information. For more information on the exclusions & limitations for this coverage, please view the LTD Certificate.

Short Term Disability Insurance

Chances are you already purchase home and auto insurance to protect against the threat of loss. So what steps have you taken to help shield yourself and your loved ones from an unexpected loss of income? Would you be able to meet your financial obligations if you became disabled and unable to work? Short Term Disability (STD) insurance is designed to pay a benefit to you in the event you cannot work because of a covered illness or injury. This benefit replaces a portion of your income, thus helping you meet your financial commitments in time of need. The risk of disability is greater than most people think. Statistics have shown:

See the Short Term Disability Insurance booklet for more detailed information. For more information on the exclusions & limitations for this coverage, please view the STD Certificate.
