Glossary of Terms

Absolute Assignment
Absolute assignment transfers all rights of the member under the basic Group Term Life and Occupational AD&D insurance policy to another party. These rights include designating a beneficiary, buying individual Life insurance under the right to convert, receiving occupational benefits, and applying to receive an accelerated benefit.

Accelerated Living Benefit
Allows the member to receive a one-time payment of up to 75 percent of their basic Group Term Life insurance benefit should they suffer from a terminal illness as defined by the policy. Any amount paid under this benefit will be deducted from the final death benefit.

Beneficiary
The person or legal entity the insured designates to receive the proceeds of the Life insurance policy in the event of their death.

Certificate of Coverage
A document provided to a group member describing general policy provisions.

Exclusion
A loss or risk that a policy does not cover.

Loss
The act of losing someone or something; termination of life, loss of limb, or sight. Different losses include: loss of life, hand, foot, speech, hearing in both ears, thumb and index finger of the same hand, quadriplegia, hemiplegia, and paraplegia.

Occupational Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)
This provision pays an additional benefit if a loss due to an accident occurs out of or in the course of the employee's employment. This loss must be caused or contributed to by an accident. Different losses include: loss of life, hand, foot, speech, hearing in both ears, thumb and index finger of the same hand, quadriplegia, hemiplegia and paraplegia.

Policy
A contract for insurance between an insurance company and policyholder stating details of coverage.

Proof of Loss
Evidence that shows the insurance company that a loss has occurred that substantiates a claim.

Term Life Insurance
A Life insurance policy that provides a stated benefit upon the insured's death, provided that the death occurs within a specified time period.
