Plan Enhancements - District Paid Plans

Life and Disability insurance plans have grown stronger with the addition of these enhancements.


Enhancements for Employees Participating in District Paid Life Insurance

MEDEX® Travel Assistance

MEDEX® provides participants and their families access to a comprehensive range of professional, 24-hour medical, legal and travel assistance information, referral and coordination services. This worldwide assistance service is available to plan participants whenever they are traveling 100 miles or more from home or when traveling in a foreign country for trips of up to 90 days.

Beneficiary Financial Support and Counseling

This service is designed to help beneficiaries understand their current financial situation and provide guidance in completing a financial plan. This service is also available to employees receiving an accelerated benefit or qualified disability benefit.

Family Status Change

Employees may add or change their dependent coverages within 31 days following a family status change (e.g., marriage, divorce, birth/adoption of a child). Evidence of Insurability requirements will be waived for dependent coverages in the event of a qualifying family status change.

Increased Accelerated Benefit to 80 Percent

This benefit provides a portion of the Life insurance benefit (up to 80%) to an insured employee who is terminally ill.

Repatriation Benefit

An additional benefit of up to $5,000 to pay expenses related to transporting the remains of an employee who dies more than 200 miles from their primary residence.

Enhanced Portability

Insured employees have a convenient option to purchase qualifying amounts of life insurance if their insurance coverage ends because they cease to be in an eligible occupation or because of termination of employment.

Occupational Assault Benefit

Provides an additional $25,000 benefit if while at work an employee suffers an AD&D loss due to an act of physical violence punishable by law (not to exceed 50% of the AD&D amount).

Child Care Benefit

Assists with child care expenses incurred within 36 months from the date of the employee's accidental death. Benefits are up to $5,000 per year, or the cumulative total of $10,000 or 25% of the AD&D Insurance Benefit, whichever is less.

Air Bag Benefit

Pays an additional $5,000 (not to exceed the AD&D amount) benefit if the employee dies as the result of an automobile accident for which a Seat Belt Benefit is payable and an air bag deploys.

Coma Benefit

Pays a monthly benefit equal to 1% of the AD&D amount for up to 30 months while an employee or insured dependent is in a coma.

AD&D - Exposure, Disappearance and Reattachment

A benefit is provided if death or other loss is due to exposure to the elements, an employee or insured dependent disappears in an accident (death is presumed after one year), or a hand or foot is severed and reattached.


Enhancements for Employees Participating in District Paid Disability Insurance

The Standard SecureCardSM

This fast and safe payment method offers bank debit card-style convenience for monthly long term disability benefit payment delivery.

Partial Disability Benefits

Subject to any benefit waiting period, employees may qualify for disability benefits under the plan even though they are still working. There is no time limit on the period an employee may work while receiving benefits.

Reasonable Accommodation Expense Benefit

Subject to The Standard's prior approval, this benefit pays for up to $25,000 of an employer's expenses toward work site modifications that result in a disabled employee's return to work.

Conversion

If coverage under the plan ends, an employee may be eligible to convert insurance to another disability plan.

Subject to The Standard's prior approval, rehabilitation incentives may include:

Family Care Benefit

This provision helps reimburse disabled employees who return to work by providing up to $250 per month per family member (not to exceed a total of $500 per month) for employees who have the added expense of family care, for up to 12 months.

Child Care Benefit

Assists with child care expenses incurred within 36 months from the date of the employee's accidental death, up to $1,000 per year.

Dependent Education Benefit

This provision provides a monthly benefit - $150 for each eligible student, with a maximum of $600 per month for all eligible students - for disabled employees who have children or a spouse who are registered, and in full-time attendance, at a licensed or accredited educational institution beyond high school.

Survivor Benefit tied to Gross Benefit

A Survivor Benefit can help to address a family's financial need in the event of the disabled employee's death by paying a lump sum equal to three times the employee's unreduced disability benefit to eligible survivors.
